Local Lunch
Local Lunch is the “next
step” in our on-going efforts to bring more local foods
to students in Portland cafeterias. Our Farm-to-School program
began in 2006 with the introduction of Harvest of the Month.
What is a Local
Lunch?
Once a month we will serve a meal
that is made entirely from local products. Our
“local” region includes Oregon, Washington and
California counties North of San Francisco.

What are the benefits
of Local Lunch?
Economic –
Our purchases directly support
local farmers and bakers, packers, truck drivers, and others
within our regional food economy.
Known
source – We know where the foods we serve
come from, who raised it, and how it traveled to our
doors.
High
quality food and delicious lunches –
Foods are fresh or minimally processed and high in nutrients to
fuel students’ minds throughout the school
day.
Environmental
– Food from local sources travels less distance reducing
the impact on the environment.
It’s a
step in the right direction – We are working
toward the day when every lunch served includes food from our
region, so we’re redesigning the menu one meal at a
time.

Local Lunch is
made possible through grant funding from the Kaiser Permanente
Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation. Ecotrust,
the Western Regional Lead Agency for the National Farm-to-School
network, submitted the grant proposal and is managing the
project.
